External Wall Insulation
Insulating your solid walls will cut your energy requirements considerably.
Other Benefits of EWI are:
- Minimal disruption to your home during implementation.
- It does not reduce the internal floor area of your house.
- Renews the appearance of your walls.
- It improves the weatherproofing, and the life of your external walls, whilst improving Airtightness.
With our fully trained and accredited tradesmen, the process normally takes 3 to 4 weeks on a 3 bedroom semi-detached property.

We use a number of systems including SPS, Envirowall and NBT’s
Woodfibre breathable insulation and render when insulating externally.
Internal insulation
Internal insulation to your walls costs space, but is generally cheaper than external insulation.
It is particularly important to design your Internal wall insulation to suit your property. Many solid wall houses were built with a lime mortar and internal plaster, and the walls “breathed” when they were built allowing the transfer of moisture. In this situation we will always recommend a breathable insulation such as NBT’s woodfibre products for which Green Hat is accredited to install.
In other circumstances will fit a “dry lined” insulation to the manufacturers specification, or architect’s instructions. We also fit Aerogel, normally in special circumstances, due to the cost.
Underfloor insulation
Suspended floor insulation reduces heat loss through your floor and when fitted correctly removes draughts that make the floor/room feel colder. Make sure that care is taken to provide good ventilation.
It is also an opportunity to repair/replace floor timbers and coverings and create a stylish wood floor finish.
Airtightness
Airtightness is primarily focusing on the elimination of all unintended gaps and cracks on the external envelope of the building.
Airtightness is an essential part of creating a healthy, comfortable, energy-efficient living environment. In contrast, air leakage is where leaks occur due to gaps and cracks that should not be there in the first place.
This can account for up to 50% of all heat losses through the external envelope of a building.
Green Hat has been involved with several projects recently where Airtightness was key, and we see this as an important keystone of building going forward.
Green Hat is accredited to fit Passive Purple paint – an airtight paint, and has several years of experience with tapes, membranes, and the complexity of achieving airtightness during a retrofit build.
